If a foreign national marries an Indian citizen, it is mandatory to register the marriage in India.
Only marriages registered under the Special Marriage Act are accepted by the FRRO for visa purposes.
After registration, all relevant documents must be submitted to the FRRO for processing.
The case is forwarded for police verification to validate the submitted documents and the marriage.
The FRRO then sends the file to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) for visa approval.
Upon approval, a Dependent or Family Visa is granted to the foreign spouse.
The overall process may take 4 to 12 weeks depending on the location and case complexity.
